A message from Professor Ray Walker
Chairman of Standing Committee for Convocation
Due to the expiry of the current terms of office, there are three vacancies for members of Convocation to sit on the University of Hull Court. This is a three year appointment for graduates of the University to attend the AGM of the University Court which receives the Annual Report and Accounts and nominates five members to sit on the University Council.
If any of our graduates are interested in the opportunity to become a member of University Court, would you please notify the Clerk to Convocation, Mrs Bridget Mustard, Alumni Relations Officer, telephone 01482 465516 or email: b.e.mustard@hull.ac.uk. When contacting the Clerk to Convocation, it would be helpful if you could advise your course, date of graduation, and your current employment details or status.

GRADUATE REUNION WEEKEND 4-6 JULY 2008
We are delighted to extend an invitation to all our graduates, along with their partners and friends, to the Annual Reunion Weekend
The weekend commences on Friday, 4 July, with registration and afternoon tea at The Lawns from 4pm. The Annual General Meeting of Convocation, at The Lawns, will start at 6.30pm on Friday and Chairman, Professor Ray Walker, will be delighted to welcome as many graduates as are able to attend. The AGM will be followed by a BBQ (whatever the weather!) and a firework display. The Concourse Bar will open from 6.00pm, so there will be ample time to relax and catch up with old friends.
Saturday coincides with the University Open Day, when the Union will be open and all departments will be staffed - including the Business School and the newly opened Logistics Institute located on the western side of campus. Morning coffee will be served in Staff House (the old Students’ Union) after which Emeritus Professor Theo Hoppen will deliver the alumni lecture. Lunch and refreshments will be available in the Myton Restaurant, Staff House, and the Continental Café in the Students’ Union.
You are welcome to wander around campus, perhaps visiting your old department or enjoying a drink in the Union bar. The University´s Art Collection will be open, offering you the chance to view an outstanding collection of paintings and sculptures including works by Walter Sickert, Lucian Pissarro, Augustus John, Stanley Spencer, Jacob Epstein and Henry Moore. Also on display are two important collections of Chinese ceramics, on long loan from Dr Peter Thompson (Law ´58).´
Saturday evening commences with a champagne reception in the Jubilee Room, followed by dinner - hosted by our Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Drewry. We are delighted to welcome Rosie Millard (English/Drama ´87), who has kindly agreed to be our guest speaker.
Rosie´s distinguished media career spans print, radio and television. She became a cult figure as BBC News Arts Correspondent and has been Arts Editor of the New Statesman. She currently writes for the Sunday Times on a range of topics including political profiles, property and culture. She claims that her ability to rise to a challenge was honed during her studies at Hull, which included English, drama and ‘quite a lot of extra-mural history of art’. We know from her previous contributions at the University and at alumni events that she will be a highly entertaining speaker.
Bed and breakfast is available at The Lawns, but book early as rooms are limited. However there is a list of alternative accommodation (see Gradlink). You may book the whole programme or just book the events you would like to attend, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible back on campus.
If you should require further information please call 01482 466645 or email janet.waudby@hull.ac.uk

ATTENTION ALL PAST RESIDENTS OF THWAITE HALL
Dear graduates A few days ago, Dr David Sands, who is the present Warden at Thwaite Hall, called in to see me in the Alumni Office. You may not know, but Thwaite has been undergoing extensive refurbishment over the past year and, as a consequence of this ongoing work, a number of items of "historical memorabilia" have come to light, including a military form (discovered behind a dresser) dating back to 1944. The form, written in French, described an officer who had been blinded in action, and who had been nursed back to health at Thwaite. Part of Thwaite´s history is that it was used as a sanitorium for injured servicemen during the Second World War - a fact, I must admit, I did not know!.
All this set David to thinking it would be a good idea to ask our graduates to recall any of their memories, amusing anecdotes, or interesting snippets of information regarding Thwaite Hall over the years, and that these could become part of a "Thwaite historical scrap book".
So, we would be very pleased and grateful to hear from you, and to receive any memories, and photographs, that you think would be appropriate for this project. Both David and I believe that our present and future undergraduates will be very interested to learn of Thwaite´s past which, of course, is a large part of the University of Hull´s history. Please email me at: b.e.mustard@hull.ac.uk, or write to me at The University of Hull, Development & Alumni Relations, Hull HU6 7RX
With best wishes, Bridget, Alumni Relations Officer, University of Hull

LONDON ALUMNI GROUP SKILLS SHARE
The London Alumni Group is full of people with excellent skills and expertise, and no doubt enthusiasm about their jobs and career paths. There are probably some people who´d like to explore new horizons and would like to dip a toe into some new professional areas. The plan is to hold an evening when some people offer to share their skills, and others listen and learn.
For example: I could offer to tell people how to write an effective press release, or how to interview for radio or how to be interviewed. I´d like to know how to set up a website. Can you offer any of the following:
handwriting analysis,
effective fund-raising for a favourite charity,
researching your family tree,
preparing to run marathons,
or perhaps something else!
What would you like to learn?
The evening would be in the form of small groups where a "skill-offerer" talks for, say, 20 minutes, so there´s the possibility of attending two or three
groups, and breaking for a drink and a chat at a strategic point.
REPLY to : Hull_University_Alumni_london @yahoogroups.com if you would like to offer a skillshare, or seek a new skill, or would just like to turn up and listen.
