Class of 1985

Kenneth Bates (Law and Politics)
I retired from the Humberside Police in March 2000 and since then have worked as the area manager for the 2001 census and as a registrar, county manager for Victim Support Lincolnshire. I still live in North Lincolnshire.

Judith Coates (Physics)
Hello to Applied Physics Class of ’85 – I am having a ‘year off’ living in the Sierras in California with Larry (boyfriend) and Millie (dog) – whose full name is Millie Joule! I am learning to mountain bike, ride and ski. Special hello to Sarah, Sally and Julie, if you’re out there?

Wendy Cootes (nee Sharman) (Classical Studies and Italian)
Steve and I are now back in the UK and looking forward to catching up with any Hullites. Steve’s still with Ford Motor Company and doing a project with Ford of Europe Marketing. I’m enjoying doing a City and Guilds photographic course.

Rosemary Ellis (nee Prill) (Linguistics)
Still married to Chris (Electronic Eng ’85) and we have two daughters – Sophie 9 and Katie 6. I am working as a teacher in a primary school in Maidenhead, after having spent 10 years in local government. I love my job, but hate all the hassle that goes with it, especially working in a school that is under special measures. I would love to hear from anyone that remembers me from the Hull days, especially all the linguistics lot!

Janette Gaunt (nee Riordan)
Stayed in Hull for 2 years after graduating. Moved to Scotland in 1994. I’m still married to Allen and we have two boys aged 11 and 13. I’m currently working as a registered childminder. Allen is a systems programmer working in Edinburgh.

Andrew Law (Chemistry)
My wife, Jayne, and I were lucky enough to have twins, Alexander and Eleanor, born in February this year. See their pictures or contact me at www.alaw.co.uk

Alison Mackinnon (nee MacFarlane) (American Studies)
After graduating I joined Marks & Spencer; then moved into financial recruitment for Robert Walters in London. In 1994 I moved to Paris with my husband Andrew. Eight years on and two sons later we are still here. I am teaching English at the boys’ school and love France.

Tina Mair (nee Evans) (English)
In June 2000 I moved to Buckingham with my husband Howard and my three sons. I currently work at the University of Buckingham in the Department of Management where I teach Human Resource Management on a part time basis. Seventeen years after leaving Hull, I still meet up with Julia, Melanie, Alison and Ruth for our girls’ weekends.

Helena Mapanzure (nee Tarrant) (English)
I live in London with my husband, Levi, and our son John, who was born in May ’99. I am working as a PA in a firm of business psychologists and am developing freelance work in cartoon drawing.

Nicola Mitchell (nee Fern) (Mathematics)
Still working too many hours for too little pay as a primary school teacher. Weekends are full of football, both my sons play for local teams and we still follow Sheffield United. Hello to anyone who remembers me. Feel free to get in touch. Have 17 years really gone by?

Tony Pilkington (Engineering)
After graduating I worked in Halifax for a company on PVD coating of engineering tools. Married to Denise on April 1st 1995. Our son Rowan was born in 1996 and we have never had a quiet moment since. Working as a PVD technical manager since 1998 for Ultra Finishing in Burnley. Still see Robb Doyle at Loughborough University.

Nicola Richards (nee Trow) (European Studies)
A summary of the 16 years since I graduated: Joined Boots in Nottingham as a Marketing Researcher. Got married. Joined a start up in Surrey, providing data to the pharmaceutical industry (still there 14 years later). Had a son, James (11), got divorced. Remarried, had a daughter, Hannah (6), still bowling (badly) and supporting Birmingham City (avidly).

Ann Thompson (Economics)
In 2001 I married Dennis Worner so it looks as though I will be staying in the area for some time to come (Hull).

James Winkless (Sociology)
Married with two children, I now practise the arcane art of permaculture on a small farm in east Kent.
