Dr Anthony Andrews (Chemistry ’87, PhD ’91) died on 1 September 2001, aged 35. Anthony worked in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Ohio University.

Professor Erkin Bairam (Econ ’82, PhD Econ ’86) passed away on 12 January 2002. He worked in the Department of Oceanography, University of Hull, and the Marine Laboratory, Aberdeen.

Dr John Bradshaw (Hon Grad) died on 24 July 2001, aged 70 years. He was a Director of Ferens Art Gallery. After retirement Dr Bradshaw was honoured for his contribution to the city’s cultural life in the late 1990s when the University conferred on him an honorary doctorate.

Christine Flint (Accounting ’94) died in a car accident on 3 February 2002. Christine was a lecturer in accounting and management in the Hull University Business School, Scarborough Campus, where she had taught since September 2000.

Dr A Ghazzali (better known to colleagues as ‘Ghazz’), of the Centre for Educational Studies, collapsed on 9 March and later died in hospital. For the last 10 years Dr Ghazzali had been Warden at Cleminson Hall.

Robert Kennedy Gillies (Maths & Physics ’61) died on 23 September 2001, aged 62. Robert worked in the business analyst and IT world and was a keen sailor. An enthusiastic researcher into family history, he delighted in tracing friends from his undergraduate days. He leaves a widow, Iris, and sons Julian, Perrin and James.

Stanley Jackson (Chemistry ’57) died in January 2001. Stanley was a teacher for most of his working life and took early retirement aged 50. He then started his own gas fitting and plumbing business. He finally retired from work in 2000. His widow, June (Geography ’58), remembers Hull with great affection.

Dr Douglas Kidder (Chemistry ’43) died in April 2001.

Lorraine Margaret Long (Psychology ’90) died on 17 April 2001.

Sir Cyril Edward Lucas (Zoology ’31, Hon DSc ’75) died on 12 January 2002, aged 92. Sir Cyril was a marine biologist of distinction and was Director of Fisheries Research for Scotland from 1948 to 1970. He began his career at the University College of Hull. In 1948 he moved to the Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen as its Director. Sir Cyril was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1966. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh from 1939. He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1976 for his contribution to international fisheries.

Susan Lumsden (nee Cottam) (French ’63) died on 30 January 2002, aged 59. After graduating Susan taught French at Bartley Green Grammar School, Birmingham, and for more than 20 years in Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

Ivor W Pfuell (History ’74) died on 11 August 2001.

Helen Pinder (Social Policy & Criminology ’96) died in a road accident on 1 January 2002. Helen returned to the University last year to study in the Department of Social Work and Community Health.

Margaret Wheble (nee Leppington) (Botany and Zoology ’71) died on 21 January 2001 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Peter Windle (German ’67) died during 2001.

Emma Wylie (Psychology ’97) died on 20 December 2001 following a road accident in the United States. Since graduating from Hull, Emma had worked in marketing for a fashion house, and also completed an MSc in Occupational Psychology at the University of East London.
