Alumni across the WorldThe University of Hull is mounting a drive to form alumni associations far and wide across the world. Alumni associations already exist in Hong Kong, London, Malaysia and Singapore, and plans are in hand to form groups in the USA and Cyprus. The longer-term goal is also to establish associations in India, mainland China and South Africa.

As well as those specific countries, we will be pleased to hear from alumni anywhere in the world who would like advice and support from the University to establish a new alumni association. Contact Bridget Mustard, Alumni Relations Officer, on +44 1482 465516 or email b.e.mustard@hull.ac.uk

Bridget points out that there are many benefits to be derived from belonging to an alumni group: ‘These groups provide opportunities to network, benefiting business or career, and alumni may be in a position to help new graduates in their careers. On the social side, you can rekindle old friendships, make new ones, meet up from time to time and maintain the spirit of Hull.’

The University is planning to establish two alumni associations in the USA – one to serve the West Coast and the other to serve the East. Letters and questionnaires have been sent to all our alumni in the USA to gain feedback on how we can help them form groups. A similar exercise is to be carried out in Cyprus.

As part of the University of Hull’s 75th anniversary celebrations in 2003, plans are also in hand to form a Yorkshire alumni group. Any Yorkshire-based graduates wishing to ‘come on board’ should get in touch with Bridget.

Trip to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur

Bridget Mustard recently spent two days helping our whirlwind Director of the International Office, Andrew Lee, on the University of Hull stand at the Careers Exhibition in the Sun Tec Centre in Singapore. There was keen interest in the courses offered and Andrew is confident that a number of students will be registering with Hull. In the future we are hoping that Hull alumni will help on our exhibition stands at recruitment fairs, to offer advice based on their time at Hull, and to encourage potential students. If anyone is interested and would like to offer their services, please contact Bridget (b.e.mustard@hull.ac.uk).

Andrew and Bridget shared a very enjoyable and informative dinner with Alan Ong, President of the Singapore Alumni Association, and later met a number of our graduates, when there was the opportunity to exchange ideas on how the University of Hull can further its relationship with the Singapore Alumni Association and encourage graduates to become members of the group.

Bridget also spent two days in Kuala Lumpur and, as in Singapore, had very interesting meetings with a good number of graduates. It was fortunate that her trip coincided with a private visit by Terry and Jean Smith, who had been visiting their family in Australia. On Bridget’s first day, Terry and Jean introduced her to many of their friends – all graduates of Hull – and among other matters she learnt all about Jean’s famous apple pie, which was obviously very popular with Malaysian Hull graduates!

Bridget reports that on her second day she met many more Hull graduates and was very kindly entertained at the Royal Selangor Club, where, after a delicious meal with good conversation, numerous ideas were exchanged. Bridget is still trying to remember all the jokes – or maybe she should try to forget most of them! Bridget wishes to thank Cheng Gaik for all her help and also Rajes, who valiantly attended two feasts on consecutive nights.

Many of our Malaysian graduates indicated that they would like to visit Hull for a reunion during the 75th anniversary year – an excellent thought – and it certainly would be wonderful to welcome as many as possible of our overseas alumni back to campus for the celebrations.

‘I thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many of our alumni in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur’, says Bridget – ‘very many thanks for all your most generous hospitality. Over the next few years I certainly wish to further the ideas and suggestions we shared. I look forward to seeing you all again, and hopefully meeting more of our alumni, and I send you all my very best wishes.’

This is London calling

Jane Bennett-Powell
Jane Bennett-Powell

The Events Coordinator for our new London Alumni Association (see story on page 6) is Jane Bennett-Powell. After 10 years at the BBC and 11 at ITN, Jane is now working as a freelance reporter and able to say the occasional ‘no’ to work and ‘yes’ to fixing people to speak at the alumni association, researching locations, preparing a little script for the start of the event – so little change there, then, from her television roles!

The London Group Committee aims to provide a forum for established Hull graduates and those newly arrived in the capital, as well as to raise the University’s profile.

The plan of events for the year is on www.netlearnsolutions. com/hual/events/shtml. These have already included an informal pub gathering in February and an evening in March with Hull alumnus Ed Bicknell, manager of Dire Straits and musician, and the University’s own Dr Eric Grove, who helped track down the sunken Second World War battle cruiser HMS Hood.

Diaries permitting, the following have all agreed to speak: Rosie Millard, Arts Correspondent at the BBC; Professor David Purdie; Anthony Minghella, once his latest filming is completed; and Joan Walley and Chris Mullen, who are two of ‘our’ MPs. A Thames river cruise on 24 July and an evening at the Globe Theatre (17 August) are also part of the plan.

This is all a long way from Jane Bennett-Powell’s French degree, gained in 1976. It took a while for the French language to be useful in her career: about 20 years had passed, in fact, before she could use it in relation to a series of French and Belgian political scandals for Channel 4 News. Her subsidiary Spanish course proved helpful much earlier – the News Editor at Radio Sheffield called her in to give directions to a lorry driver, lost on his way between Barcelona and Barnsley!
