Peter Thompson (LLB ’56, LLD (Hon) ’85) has been awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star by the Government of Hong Kong.

The award is for his significant contribution in promoting Hong Kong as an international maritime centre and a world-leading port, and in particular his work as Chairman of the Port and Maritime Board. The SBS is the third-highest civilian award in Hong Kong and is similar to the British OBE, which Dr Thompson received some years ago.

Dr Thompson has made major financial contributions to the University, notably in connection with the Q W Lee Chair in Management Sciences and the Lectureship in Maritime Law. His outstanding collection of Chinese porcelain is on long-term loan to the University and can be viewed in the University Art Gallery in the Middleton Hall.
