Nine international postgraduate students from the University
of Hull have received financial assistance so far from a fund set
up in memory of Dr Arishid Ghazzali (pictured left), who died in
March 2002.
Dr Ghazzali, known as 'Ghazz', worked in the University of Hull's
Centre for Educational Studies and was also warden at Cleminson
Hall for 10 years.
He was a deeply committed educationalist, quietly assisting and
encouraging the many students he had contact with in whatever ways
he could. When he died, his family requested that instead of flowers
being sent to his funeral, donations could be made to assist University
students who are in hardship.
Out of this request grew the idea of setting up the Dr Ghazzali
Memorial Fund to help postgraduate international students. This
is a group of students for whom Dr Ghazzali had particular concern
and, unlike UK students, they are not eligible for grants from the
main Hardship Fund that the University administers.
The fund was put in place in September 2002 and the assistance
given to the nine students has enabled them to continue their studies.
